Vivian Uwakwe (Author & Illustrator)

Hello, I am pleased to meet you. Permit me to tell you a bit about myself.

Early Childhood
My father was an artist and a fantastic storyteller but did not encourage me to pursue visual art as a career. As an adult, I embarked on a journey to being a self-taught artist. You can click this link to watch my full art journey.

Journey Into Children’s Books
Some years later, I was entrusted with a six-year-old who couldn’t read or write. Teachers wanted to place the child in the nursery instead of Primary One. Determined to help, I used pictures with text to support learning. Within weeks, progress was evident, and the child caught up and joined peers.

Using skills from this experience, I bought a Wacom tablet and created an experimental children’s book. Though not a commercial success and later withdrawn, it was a crucial step in learning the ropes of publishing in Nigeria.

Winning A $1,000 Scholarship
In 2022, by divine serendipity, I won a $1,000 scholarship to SPMS (Self Publishing Made Simple). It is a 12-week workshop run by accomplished American children’s book authors April Cox and Bobbie Hinman. I became fully equipped to write, illustrate, publish, and promote children’s books for myself and clients all over the world.

Modern-Day African Griot
African folktales blend humour with moral lessons, passed down through generations by village griots. As a modern-day African griot, I weave African culture into my work, bringing diversity and global appeal to the art scene.

Driven by a love for storytelling, I document my father’s tales and bring African folktales to life. Each book, paired with an activity book, features modern language and vibrant illustrations to captivate young minds globally. With every beautifully illustrated story, I continue to shape the future of African children’s literature.

My books have been accepted for stocking at Roving Heights Bookstore, further cementing my impact in the literary space.

Education
I am an alumna of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (BSc Hons) and Anglia Ruskin University, UK (MBA International).
